Wendy Mellinger got her first camera when she was 8 years old, while growing up in Parsippany, New Jersey.

“It was a hobby of my father's.”

She received a lot of advise from him in the beginning. Wendy started pursuing her craft very early on by becoming a yearbook photographer in junior high school. By her senior year of high school she parlayed that into being photographer’s assistant in a local studio. While her peers were being normal teenagers in the late Eighties, Wendy was spending every spare moment behind the lens, putting in nearly enough hours at the studio to be considered a full time employee.

“I basically got all of my experience by putting film through the camera.”

She enjoys photographing people, but getting outside and off in the wilderness somewhere with a camera is her ideal. To capture nature in its element is one of Wendy’s favorite challenges, and she loves incorporating people in outdoor photographs.

“Nature photography is a combination of planning and spontaneity. You have to be patient. You wait for the right light, the right moment to create your vision.”

Wendy takes a laid back approach to portrait photography, much like her outdoor technique. She tries to capture her subjects as naturally as possible. She lets a child be a child and a family be a family. Wendy’s goal is to get a picture that a family will be able to look at years from now and see themselves, not just their likeness.

“What I believe sets me apart is that I take time with the subjects. I listen to them, their relationship with life, and capture their personalities as well as their images.”

On a personal level, Wendy has developed a passion for things that bring her closer to nature. In 1997 she began scuba diving and has become a deep cold-water wreck diver, where she “takes only pictures and leaves only bubbles.” Or you may catch her riding her Buell XB12Scg where she enjoys simply “smelling the air.”
